I am looking to replace my Kubota B2410 that I sold last fall. I have narrowed the search down to the L4300 (Kubota's newest addition in there L-Series Economy line) and the JD990. Both are similar in size and function. The L4300 has 45hp and an independent rear pto, it also has a flat deck with hanging pedals. The JD990 has 40hp with a live, continous rear pto and appears to be very rugged. However, a Massey Ferguson dealer says the 990's engine is no longer produced by Yanmar, instead it is now being made by Zetor!? I have been quoted $14,900 for either tractor (4WD). I am not finding much info on these tractors and was hoping some of you can help shed light on these two promising tractors. I plan on using the tractor for bushogging 7 acres and tilling several. I prefer gears. Many Thanks!Bob

I was looking at the JD990 and yea, it has a 40hp engine (35PTO). But some of the other specs weren't as impressive. The rear lift cap. of the 3pt is 1500+/- lbs, which is still probably enough. As of right now you can't get a backhoe.

The reason I mention this is that I compared it to the JD4300. Even though it has a 29PTO hp engine, it has 2200lb rear hitch cap., a bigger fuel tank, is only 200lbs lighter, more available attachments and a more modern design. I believe I can get a better price on it too.

It seems as though you're looking for a bigger machine than me, so this is just a FYI. Oh yea, my brochure also said it's a Yanmar engine. I still haven't driven any yet, I'm just spec. comparing. ....

I want to thank Stephen and Paul for their replies. Although I didn't plan on getting a backhoe I suppose the fact that there is no backhoe option available for the 990 it might hurt resale value a bit. I find it interesting they offer one for the much smaller 790! I recently came across the JD5105 and would love to get my hands on one but they appear to be out of my reach financially if I ever want to upgrade on my classic '91 Ford Tempo! I am still considering the L4300 and just waiting for my local dealer (Pine Bush Equipment) to get me a quote. I would much rather purchase locally if I can get a solid price from them, their service is excellent. If anyone else has further insight your reply would be much appreciated! After all, its your fault I go to bed dreaming about these darn machines!! No offense to my darling and quite understanding wife Kim.
Sincerely, Bob

I use to have a John deere 950 predessor of the 990 . It was a great and trouble free tractor for 24 years ! its lift capacity was the same but I was able to move a bridgeport mill without the head on it weighed over 2000#s that way. we strapped it to the John Deere 45 6 foot blade and with a few large people sitting on the hood we lifted it off the truck and into the garage . It was a Real horse we use to farm over 100 acres with it. I reasently purchased a New 790 4 WD with loader and backhoe to replace it for land scaping, It's also is a very nice tractor. The john deere 8 A is the backhoe for the 990 at last time I checked they were still making them!!

The 990 has a YANMAR engine in it and you caqn mount the JD 8A or 8B backhoe on it. If you are looking at the JD 4300, the 790 is the same HP as the 4300. ....
